Magic Tree House Curriculum and Resources

As I said in 1st grade curriculum choices, “This series is a great introduction to history without overwhelming him with dates, places, and too many other facts. Miss S LOVED this series when she was younger (and will still pick one up once in a while) and my hope is it will build an interest in history for Cap’n C. I combine the fiction novels with the non-fiction companion books, whenever possible.”

There are a lot of resources online for the Magic Tree House series, but when planning 1st grade social studies/history for Cap’n C, I couldn’t quite find exactly what I was looking for. As every homeschool blog out there will tell you, “you know your kid best.” So using that advice, I put together our own curriculum using free resources I found online and wanted to share with others who may find it useful. Some book units may only take about two weeks, while others could be three weeks or more.

Along with the Magic Tree House series and fact tracker books, I try to use a mix of worksheets, lapbook pieces, other books, crafts and videos. My son is very visual and hands-on in the ways that he learns, so incorporating videos is an important aspect. I know many parents try to limit the screen time for their kids, so if you choose to skip over these parts, that’s completely up to you.

(Update 9/15: We will be continuing with Magic Tree House for second grade as well.)

(Update 9/14/16) With Cap’n C starting 3rd grade, he will be using Story of the World as a primary history curriculum. I may still add MTH activities as they correspond with the subjects or even just for fun. He loves the MTH books and I definitely do NOT want to do anything to discourage that love of reading.
