Supplies:
- Magic Tree House Book Polar Bears Past Bedtime and the MTH Fact Tracker: Polar Bears and the Arctic [I try to get books from the library whenever possible, but they don’t always have everything.
- Download MTH #12 Questions [Free download at time of posting, but you will need a TeachersPayTeachers account]
- Optional: Magic Tree House Games and Puzzles from the Treehouse book [This gets used a lot, but I will try to find alternatives online when possible. I make copies of the pages for easy gluing into the notebook]
- The spiral or composition notebook started with book 1
- Free account at Magic Tree House
- The usual: paper, printer, ink, pencils, crayons or colored pencils
- Other supplies will depend on what additional projects you choose to do: polar bear craft– bear template, glue, cotton balls, light blue paper, google eyes, and white paint
[This unit is science-focused.]
Day 1
- Before starting reading, fill in the K and W sections of a KWL Chart about Polar Bears
- Polar Animals Cover Page from Homeschool Share
- Read prologue and chapter 1-2 of Polar Bears Past Bedtime
- Choose 3 questions to answer from the MTH#12 Questions
Day 2
- Read chapters 3-4
- Choose 3 questions to answer from the MTH#12 Questions
- Arctic Word Search (Pg.57 MTH Games and Puzzles); alternative Arctic Animal word search, if you don’t have the MTH book
- Watch How an Igloo Keeps You Warm**
Day 3
- Read chapters 5-6
- Choose 3 questions to answer from the MTH#12 Questions
- Maze (Pg.58 MTH Games and Puzzles); alternative igloo maze, if you don’t have the MTH book
- Watch How an Igloo Keeps You Warm**
Day 4
- Read chapters 7-8
- Choose 3 questions to answer from the MTH#12 Questions
- Watch All About Polar Bears for Kids**
- Color the Northern Lights coloring page (Print at 80% if using composition notebook)
Day 5
- Read chapters 9-10
- Choose 3 questions to answer from the MTH#12 Questions
- Take the Polar Bears Past Bedtime Passport Quiz (Don’t forget to log in!)
- Make a polar bear craft
Day 6
- Read chapter 1-2 Fact Tracker: Polar Bears and the Arctic/The Arctic
- Print, color and label this Arctic Circle/North Pole map and add to notebook
- Watch The Legend of the Northern Lights-Alaska Legend** and All About Auroras**
Day 7
- Read chapter 3-4 Fact Tracker: First People of the Arctic/Arctic Animals
- Print the Inuit-People-Food-Clothing-Transportation; Add lapbook piece to notebook
- Add the Arctic Animals Wheel to notebook
- Watch Popular Mechanics for Kids-North Pole**
Day 8
- Read chapter 5-6 Fact Tracker: Polar Bears/Polar Bear Life
- Fill in and add Polar Bears Diet and Anatomy lapbook pieces the best you can; here is more information about polar bears
Day 9
- Read chapter 7 Fact Tracker: The Arctic is Melting
- Take the Fact Tracker: Polar Bears and the Arctic Passport Quiz (Don’t forget to log in!)
- Fill in the L section of the KWL chart; what are your favorite or most interesting things you learned about polar bears?
Day 10
- Watch a movie such as Norm of the North or The Great Polar Bear Adventure
