Supplies:

  1. Magic Tree House  Mummies in the Morning book and Magic Tree House Research Guide: Mummies and Pyramids- A Nonfiction Companion to Mummies in the Morning (I try to get books from the library whenever possible, but they don’t always have everything)
  2. Backpack Journals for Book 3 (Click on the book and download the Backpack Study-Books 1-4. Print 1 Story Mapping with Annie page, and 1 Jack’s Facts page). You can fill in facts you want to write down on Jack’s Facts page as you come across them in the reading.
  3. Optional: Magic Tree House Games and Puzzles from the Treehouse book [This gets used a lot, but I will try to find alternatives online when possible. I make copies of the pages for easy gluing into the notebook]
  4. The spiral or composition notebook started with book 1
  5. Free account at MagicTreeHouse.com
  6. Ancient Egypt Lapbook from Homeschool Share (Only print pages with lapbook pieces listed below)
  7. The usual: paper, printer, ink, pencils, crayons or colored pencils
  8. Other supplies will depend on what additional projects you choose to do-Newspapers, Pringles. cans, Masking Tape, White Glue. (or Wheat Paste or flour paste), Acrylic Paint or Tempera Paint, and brushes for Paper Mache Canopic Jars (Day 8); River reeds or other wide grasses, a clipboard and a rock or hammer for making papyrus (Day 11)

[If using both Magic Tree House and Story of the World curricula, there may be overlapping activities. See SOTW Ch.2-4 and Ch.12-13 for more activities about Ancient Egypt]

Day 1

  • Read chapters 1-2 of Mummies in the Morning
  • After each chapter, use the story map to summarize the main event in the chapter.
  • On story map, draw the setting of where they landed (picture in book Jack and Annie were looking at)

Day 2

  • Read chapters 3-4
  • Story map after each chapter
  • Ancient Egypt Cover Page from Homeschool Share– color and glue in notebook (if using a composition notebook, print at custom scale 80% or adjust paper size to executive 7 1/4 x 10 1/2)
  • Spot the Differences (Pg. 11 MTH Games and Puzzles)

Day 3

  • Read chapters 5-6
  • Story map after each chapter
  • Hieroglyph Alphabet (Pg. 12 from MTH Games and Puzzles); Alternative: Hieroglyphics worksheet– write your name
  • Play this Pyramid Game

Day 4

  • Read chapters 7-8
  • Story map after each chapter
  • Code Breaker (Page 13 MTH Games and Puzzles); Alternative: Hieroglyphic Code
  • Watch Sid the Science Kid-Inclined Plane song**

  • Build a pyramid or burial tomb- you can build with legos, sugar cubes, or even paper mache

Day 5

  • Read chapters 9-10
  • Story map after each chapter
  • Fill in clue #3 on the Travel Journals Page. Color the backpack if you want.
  • Take the Mummies in the Morning Passport Quiz (Don’t forget to log in!)

Day 6

  • Read chapter 1: Ancient Egypt (Research Guide: Mummies and Pyramids)
  • Complete Nile River lapbook piece (from Homeschool Share) and add to notebook
  • Watch Time Warp Trio-Tut Tut**

Day 7

  • Read chapter 2: Everyday Life (Research Guide: Mummies and Pyramids)
  • Complete Egyptian Homes, Children’s Games, and Pharoah lapbook pieces and add to notebook
  • Watch Daily Life in Ancient Egypt**

Day 8

  • Read chapter 3: Egyptian Religion (Research Guide: Mummies and Pyramids)
  • Complete Gods and Goddesses and 3 Parts of Body lapbook pieces and add to notebook (We followed this up with a discussion about what we believe in versus what the ancient Egyptians believed)
  • Craft Project- Paper Mache Canopic Jars (optional)

Day 9

  • Read chapter 4: Mummies (Research Guide: Mummies and Pyramids)
  • Complete How a Mummy is Made lapbook piece and add to notebook
  • Continue Craft Project- Paper Mache Canopic Jars (optional)

Day 10

  • Read chapter 5: Egyptian Funerals (Research Guide: Mummies and Pyramids)
  •  Complete Funeral Procession and Book of Dead lapbook pieces to add to notebook
  • Play That’s a Wrap– follow the story, answer the questions, and embalm the body

Day 11

  • Read chapter 6: The Age of Pyramids (Research Guide: Mummies and Pyramids)
  • Complete Great Sphinx lapbook piece and add to notebook
  • Watch video: Ancient Egypt- Educational video for kids**
